Polar Cruise Ships
Day 1: Tromsø, Norway
Move onto your home for the next 10 days - the Silver Explorer; meet fellow adventurers and get acquainted with your luxurious surroundings. You will be introduced to your Expedition Team and have a Zodiac briefing. This first evening enjoy a Welcome Aboard cocktail party.
Day 2: At Sea
Get to know the ship, and attend lectures and adventure stories in The Theater. Learn about the areas you will explore along with the history, science, nature and wildlife. Try a spa treatment or workout, and enjoy exquisite cuisine.
Day 3: Bear Island
Thousands of sea birds dive from this island’s steep cliffs, and a landing will be made if possible. Also keep a lookout for whales known to be in the area.
Days 4-10: Arctic Sea, Explore Svalbard
Follow in the footsteps of famous explorers such as Amundsen and Nobile. Hike on tundra on the least-visited east side of Svalbard, experience seabirds such as Common eiders, Arctic terns and skuas, as well as puffins, Ivory gulls and auks. While the itinerary will depend on weather and sea ice conditions, landings and shore walks will hopefully bring you to encounters with reindeer, the Arctic fox and bearded seals. The 12-mile wide Bellsund fjord is home to snow buntings and Purple sandpipers, and there are incredible landscapes to view at Van Keulenfjord.
At Poolypnten where walrus come out of the water, visit this Prins Karls Forland National Park and learn of the animals and their habitat. Coast waters of the third largest island in this archipelago provide fantastic opportunities to visit walrus and polar bears on ice floes. Thousands of Kittiwakes and Arctic foxes will share your tundra walk here. And on the largest island, Barentsoya, long hikes and short walks bring you to more polar bears and the ruins of a 15th Century Russian settlement.
Visit a Polish research station, old whaling stations, and the steep cliffs where thousands of nesting pairs of little auks can be seen. Majestic, peaked mountains tower over deep glacier-filled bays. Watch and listen for the crashing-calving of glaciers with bergybits of ice floating in the water. Ringed seals, the favorite food of polar bears, are found here along with the bears that are tracking them!
Day 11: Longyearbyen, Svalbard
Disembark after breakfast on the ship, and be transferred to the airport for your charter to Oslo.
